I roll over and the scent of salty bacon and sweet rolls hits my senses. After he laid me down, he laid that tattoo on my hip. If I’m wearing hip hugger jeans and a crop top people will be able to see the ink, but otherwise it’s our secret…for now.

My phone buzzes in my jeans back pocket at the end of the bed. After we came back to his place, we took all night getting to know each other.

He likes the hope of sunrises. I like the peace of sunsets. He likes romcom movies but won’t admit to anyone but me and I like it. I like action movies. He likes vanilla ice cream and I like chocolate—we really had a huh moment on that one. He prefers to cook, and I prefer to eat out. Graffiti Street Bar’s pizza is one of my favorites. He’s never had it and we’re going to remedy that today. And lastly, he’s an only child but his parents gave up on him a long time ago. I have a sibling, but I had to give up on my father. He’s not going to change and if anything I feel like he blames what he did on my mother.

Yeah, shooting her was her fault…not. She was an angel and I need to come to grips that seeing him won’t get me closer to understanding who I am. My mother loved me so much she sacrificed herself. At some point I have to start standing up for myself and then people don’t have to be in front of the gun for me.

I reach down and grab my phone.

Mom: Where are you? I’m giving you ten minutes and then I’m calling the cops.

I roll my eyes. You are the cops.

Me: I’m fine. I’ll see you all later today.

Mom: But where are you? Please. I’m having a panic attack here.

Me: I’m sorry that I worried you. I’m with

I pause and think. I’m a grown-ass woman. This can be me standing up for myself. This is what I want. He is what I want.

Me: I’m sorry that I worried you. I’m with Ozzy.

I giggle when I realize I don’t know his last name.

I hit send and throw myself back into his bed. It’s not a bad bed, squeaks too much though. Pretty sure his roommates probably didn’t appreciate that.

The phone buzzes. Mom, please.

Naomi: Cray’s Ozzy?

Is there really two Ozzy’s in ten thousand people of Kildare?

“Ughhhh,” I grunt as a tall, dark, and handsome morning treat comes in the door carrying a…cabinet door?

“What’s wrong?”

“Nothing.” He doesn’t need to know what she said. “What’s up with the door?”

“Well, I don’t have a serving tray, but I do have a screwdriver, so I just took a door off to make one.”

Now that’s genius.

“Cool.”

“I made cinnamon pull-aparts, bacon, and eggs.” He sets the platter on the bed. “And coffee, of course.”

I lift a to-go mug and take a sip. He likes his with cream, just like I do. “Oh, yeah, that’s the stuff.
